The European correspondents of France Football have voted Leo Messi the best player of 2009 with 473 votes. He’s the first Argentinean to receive the award.

Anybody who has seen him in action already knew – but now it’s official. According to the December edition of France Football, Leo Messi is the best player in the world.

473 votes

QM3D7019.jpgMessi came top of the vote by a clear margin. He received 473 votes, well ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (233 votes) and Xavi (170 votes). He is the ninth Barça player to take the award and the first since Ronaldinho in 2005.

Since the French magazine opened up the award to cover all domestic leagues three years ago, no player has recieved such an overwhelming majority of the votes as Leo Messi. The Argentine has become the first player from the Barça youth system to win the coverted prize. In 2007 Kaká won with a total of 444 votes and last year Cristiano Ronaldo did so with a total of 446.

Third in 2007, second in 2008

He has made steady progress, finishing third in 2007 behind Kaká and Cristiano Ronaldo and then second in 2008 behind Cristiano. And now he has taken that final step to finish first in 2009.

The first Argentinean

2009-12-01_MESSI_PORTADA_FRANCE_FOOTBALL_003.JPGIt’s hard to believe but Leo Messi is the first Argentinean player to lift the Ballon d'Or. However, until 1995 the award was only open to European players, which excluded players of the stature of Diego Maradona.

Messi upstages drama-prone Madrid

Having won the Ballon d'Or on Tuesday, Lionel Messi struck twice at RC Deportivo La Coruña as FC Barcelona cemented their place at the top of the Liga with a 3-1 win on a night which also brought drama for Real Madrid CF.

Messi double
Messi produced a typically assured finish 27 minutes into the late game in Spain, slipping past Manuel Pablo to fire low into the left of the net, but Barcelona's defending was nothing like as slick as they squandered their lead before the break. A misplaced header from Sergio Busquets gifted Adrián López a sight of goal, with Víctor Valdés taking some of the blame for allowing the striker's header to get past him. Barcelona dominated, but it took until the 79th minute for Messi to make that pressure tell, with a slick move ending with Pedro Rodríguez crossing for the unmarked Argentinian to head the winner. Zlatan Ibrahimović then made it 3-1 with a cool strike two minutes from time.

Ping-pong affair
Madrid had earlier got out of jail with a 4-2 win against UD Almería. Los Merengues looked set for a comfortable night when Sergio Ramos headed them into a 30th-minute lead, but the game was turned on its head after the break, with Fernando Soriano finding the net with the help of a deflection off Raúl Albiol before Kalu Uche made it 2-1 with a powerful shot following a corner. Gonzalo Higuaín equalised after defender Santiago Acasiete failed to clear Marcelo's cross, and the game was wrapped up eight minutes from the end, Karim Benzema finishing after Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty was saved. The Portuguese winger soon atoned, though he would have struggled to miss after Higuaín's ball left him an easy finish to make it 4-2. However, his night ended badly as he was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Sevilla slip
The win was doubly valuable to Madrid with third-placed Sevilla FC having dropped two points at home in one of the day's two early games. Sevilla equalised from the spot through Luis Fabiano after Manucho had given Real Valladolid CF the lead at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, but there were no further goals after the interval. Elsewhere, Club Atlético de Madrid won 2-0 at Xerez CD, with Diego Forlán and Sergio Agüero the scorers.

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas set to become new boss

Chelsea target Andre Villas-Boas is on the verge of becoming the club's new manager, BBC Sport understands.
He resigned at Porto on Tuesday having guided the club to a domestic double and the Europa League last season.
Porto have received the outstanding £13.3m compensation detailed in the termination clause of Villas-Boas's contract, paving the way for a move.
Chelsea, who sacked Carlo Ancelotti in May, confirmed their interest and are discussing terms with the 33-year-old.

"We hope to reach agreement with him on personal terms and make a further announcement in the near future," a Chelsea club statement read.
In a statement from Porto, the Portuguese club said Villas-Boas had been replaced as coach by his assistant Vitor Pereira, who had signed a contract for two seasons.
Porto president Jorge Pinto da Costa admitted he was not surprised by the departure of Villas-Boas and said: "When he went to spend a weekend in London a month or so ago, I spoke to Vitor Pereira and asked him if he would be ready to take over. He told me he was and I was relieved.
"Last Friday, I warned him it was about to happen. What has happened is part of life and of football. We accept it."
Villas-Boas was one of a several coaches linked with Chelsea after Ancelotti was dismissed following a season that produced no silverware, although the London club finished as runners-up to Manchester United in the Premier League.
Among the other candidates touted as possible replacements for the Italian were Turkey coach Guus Hiddink and former Fulham, Manchester City and Blackburn boss Mark Hughes.
Ray Wilkins, former assistant to Ancelotti at Chelsea, feels Villas-Boas could face a difficult challenge with some of the club's senior players were he to take charge.
"Let's give the young man a chance, he's obviously done exceptionally well," Wilkins told Sky Sports. "His man-management skills from what I can read from the players he has worked with have been first-class.
"That will be required at Stamford Bridge because these are big players, big guys, very nice men I've got to say, and it will be very interesting to see how this young man goes on."
Former Chelsea boss John Hollins believes Villas-Boas could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for the west London club, who are yet to realise owner Roman Abramovich's dream of winning the Champions League, and were beaten in the semi-finals by Manchester United last season.
"He could be fearless," Hollins told BBC Sport. "It will be fresh for the players, they need a boost. I think it could be a breath of fresh air, bringing in a fresh approach to this maybe tired football team.
"This guy is as young as some of the players are so he will be on the same wavelength with them, but is it going to be a three or four year programme as opposed to having to win something in his first year? That is the one thing we don't know yet, but he has won three competitions in Portugal just like that so he could be a whizzkid.
"It's a gamble but I think it's calculated gamble. I still don't know if Mr Hiddink will be coming as an advisor to the young man, if he does that will only strengthen the position."
Under Villas-Boas, Porto won both the Portuguese league and league cup last season, as well as the Europa League.
They were unbeaten in the league, with 27 wins in 30 matches, becoming only the second Portuguese club to complete a league campaign without losing a game, after Benfica in 1972-73.
A scout for compatriot Jose Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, Villas-Boas began his managerial career with Portuguese club Academica in October 2009.
Academica were winless and bottom of the first division at the time but finished the season in 11th place.
They also reached a Portuguese League Cup semi-final before Villas-Boas left to take over at Porto in June 2010.
Villas-Boas, who speaks fluent English, also worked with Sir Bobby Robson during the former England manager's spell in charge of Porto.

Manchester United Plan Surprise Move for Former Liverpool Hero

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is being linked with a move to Manchester United, according to Spanish radio station Radio Cadena Ser.
The current Real Madrid player has become an intrinsic part of Jose Mourinho’s side which lifted the Copa Del Rey last season and the Spanish side that won the European Championships, and the World Cup last summer.
But with Madrid having signed Nuri Sahin, who could ably fill Alonso’s position and with Sami Khedira also in their ranks the the 29-year-old may see his opportunities limited next season, and United may be interested.

With United having lost Paul Scholes, Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly desperate to replace the midfielder and sees Alonso as the perfect addition to his squad. (Give Me Football)
Given the strength of feeling that Xabi Alonso reportedly still has for Liverpool it seems likely that whether Man United made a move for his services, he would more than likely turn it down. The Real Madrid midfielder will see recent additions put a strain on his position in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven as the Bernabeu boss looks to trust more to youth.
The arrival of Nuri Sahin from Borussia Dortmund, coupled with the likes of Sami Khedira sitting waiting on the bench, could lead to the Spanish international not necessarily being a guaranteed first team regular. The 29 year old has completed two seasons at Real Madrid but only has a Copa Del Rey to show for his efforts but appears keen to remain at the La Liga giants as they once again try to beat arch rivals Barcelona to significant silverware.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly looking to strengthen his midfield and is looking to add a box to box midfielder who can able replace the now retired Paul Scholes, Clearly Alonso is a better tackler than the former Old Trafford hero and that would clearly help given that there is a lack of steel in the centre of the club’s midfield, even more so now that Owen Hargreaves has left the club after his injury plagued spell.
Ferguson is also reportedly interested in Lassana Diarra as well Everton youngster Jack Rodwell as he looks to spend substantial sums freshening up his squad. Man United already wrapped up the purchase of Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers and are expected to complete deals to sign Aston Villa winger Ashley Young and Atletico Madrid keeper David de Gea.
Arguably Liverpool have not as yet managed to ably replace Xabi Alonso in the heart of the Merseyside outfit’s midfield. The former Real Sociedad man spent five consistent seasons at the club, winning the Champions League in his first term. Raul Meireles has shown sparks of quality since his arrival from FC Porto but is yet to hit the heights. Jordan Henderson has been brought in but is still not a like for like replacement and is clearly a player who is yet to fulfill his apparent potential.
